There are many different things that influence teachers and students to use technology in the classroom. One major influence is the ease that it brings not only students but teachers. With technology, teachers can do things like sharing grades, updating parents on how the children are doing, and even assigning in class and at home assignments. Technology can also help students learn more about a subject by using the internet and it also gives children a way to feel like they are truly part of society.
The ISTE standards are all great ways to use technology for education. One standard that was meaningful to me was "Stay current with research that supports improved student learning outcomes, including findings from the learning sciences.” This is meaningful to me because growing up I always had teachers who weren’t afraid to admit when they didn’t know the answer to a question or if they needed to look up more information. Technology is a great way to not only stay up to date with the newest information but also to help me when I thought I knew something but actually didn’t. One standard that seems to be out of my skill set right not is "Model and promote management of personal data and digital identity and protect student data privacy.” I don’t know enough about data privacy so theres no way I could teach my students about it either.
I do agree that our generation should be known as “digital natives” because our whole lives we have been introduced to the newest technology. I don’t remember a time that my mom wasn’t working on her laptop or my dad wasn’t playing with his video games. I believe that being a digital native doesn’t mean that I am the most technological savvy person, but it means that I have no lived in a world where technology wasn’t the most talked about topic. Although many teachers know how to set up their projectors, there is definitely a difference between “digital natives” and the generations before. Many teachers are very good with technology, but they weren’t using it since they were in elementary school, so there is definitely a difference not only in skills but in confidence around technology. Although I do know a lot about technology now, I know once I become a teacher I’m going to want to stick with the things I know, despite the ever changing and evolving technology.

  1. Kendall,
I believe that ease is a major influence on why technology is used in educational settings. It provides convenience for both the educators and the students because of the variety of uses it offers. It presents information for students at their finger tips because they no longer need to walk to a library to find answers to their questions. Regarding the term "digital natives" I agree that it suits our generation because we have grown up using technology on a daily basis for example our phones or television. Although a majority of our youth is not technologically savvy as you mentioned, I still believe this term can be used because we know most basic functions of technological tools.

  2. Hello Kendall,
Teachers who aren't afraid to look up answers are the most true to me because it shows a sense of genuineness that students can relate too. It also shows the beneficial sides of having technology in the classroom.
